You get up when?!?!

Being a wife and a mom means that there are some days that my time and space isn’t my own. That sort of goes with territory. But I’m learning that the things that I do for myself and the time I spend with the Lord make me a better mom and wife (even if I do need to run the vacuum or fold that load of clothes). I know my husband would rather come home to a happy wife and messy home than a grouchy wife and an immaculate house. (Like I could keep an immaculate house if I wanted to…)

My “me” time starts early, around 5:05 am early. I know, some of you are already rolling your eyes or thinking she’s crazy. (And maybe I am a bit crazy, but I think it’s due more to the two mobile boys under the age of 3…) There’s a little background behind why I enjoy getting up so early. Before I married I enjoyed working out and being active, but once I had a job and a household, exercise was the first thing to go. I would try to be active but it was never important enough to be a consistent part of my life. Then I gained over 60 lbs with my first pregnancy. (I don’t know how that happened. It couldn’t have been the Dairy Queen blizzards every night!) After I had Mark I struggled to lose most of the weight but never got back to my old size. Then I had Luke and realized that I wasn’t taking care of myself. I wasn’t eating well and I definitely wasn’t exercising. And most importantly, I was always tired and grouchy. None of my clothes fit and I didn’t even have the energy to be a good mom. So, my husband decided we would change our lifestyle together. We enrolled in the Body For Life Challenge in early May and have been going strong ever since. We've changed our eating and both have been working out 6 days a week for almost 3 months. So, that’s why I’m up at 5:05 every morning. I hit the gym at 5:30 when it opens and alternate lifting weights and running on the elliptical. When I started I honestly didn’t think I would make it a week. But after a few days I realized that getting up early didn’t mean that I was tired. I actually had more energy! I’m happy to report that I haven’t slept in and skipped a workout a single morning in the last 11 weeks. I feel better. My clothes are fitting and my husband and I have the energy to play with our kids and enjoy spending time with each other. By getting up early, I can get in this important me time and I even have time to eat, shower and have some computer time before my kids ever get up.

Of course like most moms, my other favorite time of the day is nap time. I am fortunate to have both my boys napping from 2-4, so this is when I read, blog, email, pray and sometimes nap myself. And I think I might take Sandra's suggestion and add some chocolate in there too! I really try not to do any housework during this time because the rest of the day is busy enough with the kids and running the house. I hope you all have some "me" time in your day. You can’t take care of your family if you don’t take care of yourself!

That is early! Having more energy would be worth it though.

I 100% agree. I get up every morning and go to the gym and I have never felt better or looked better. It is worth the sacrifice. I do take advantage of that downtime in the afternoons too though!! :) Have a great day and great post!

It does sound like it would be worth it to be able to have all of that done before the kids get out of bed. Ben and I usually work out right before or after dinner, but I know that will soon have to change! It does actually make me feel better too!

I've been working out regularly almost a week and a half... not much I know but its a start. I understand the weight struggles. I'm thankful that I've been able to lose some weight and I'm currently around the weight I was when we got married five years ago, but I'm still aways away from where I'd like to be. My hubby and I are working together to get more healthy. Its great doing it together.
Thanks for sharing! Keep up the good work! C'mon by Wani's World and check out my WFMW post!

I agree we all need our "me" time, in fact I'm working on a post about that so this post is timely!

I normally get my "me" time at night (unfortunately) I've tried getting up before everyone else but my husband gets up at 5:30 and leaves for work by 6:00 so it hasn't worked out for me to get up earlier... I used to always have my "me" time in the morning and I really liked that!

Thanks for dropping by A Frugal Housewife, we hope you come back again soon!

I agree too. And when they begin to lose their afternoon naps is quite possibly a moms worst day!

(by the way, I answered your question on my site- thanks for stopping by!)

I think that is awesome that you are up that early and working out. I did that before I had kids, but I do know that if I get up by 6:30 I can have some me time and my devotions before the kids wake up. I am not good at being consistent about it especially if my 10 month old didn't have a great night, but I do need to get better at it. Thank you for this post!

I've been getting up around 6:00 lately and love that time before my boys wake up. I'm hoping to 'back it up' and get up even earlier in the weeks ahead. I'm glad to know it's working for you... great encouragement!

i still don't "enjoy" working out, but i "tolerate" it rather than "detest" it. :) keep up the good work!

I'm doing BFL too! I started my second challenge this past Sunday. I love it! I get up at 5:30 on my HIIT days and 4:45 on my weight training days. I have to be to work by 6:30, but I LOVE getting it over with in the morning. If I wait until after work, I have a hard time doing it, but before-I'm a ball of energy!

That's a great tip...so many of us forget about me time!

I don't go to the gym and my husband leaves for work at 5 am, but I am a morning person. I generally wake up around 6:30 or earlier and get a few things done. It gives me time to read the Bible, write in my journal, jump rope in my living room, and just have a cup of tea before the kids are up and going. I home school my kids so that is pretty much the only me time that I get ever. It is worth it though.
